The Ups and Downs of Developing Apps for the Apple iPhone

The Ups and Downs of Developing Apps for the Apple iPhoneVeriCorder Technology has been developing and refining its Poddio Audio Recording and Editing Application for the iPhone for over one year now. Primarily designed for Broadcast and Podcast professionals, Poddio is a very feature-rich application. Designing for the iPhone has been both exciting and challenging. Apple has provided Developers with the same software tools and libraries that their own programmers are using to develop in-house Apps, for only $99.00. However, during this time, Apple has published 5 major releases of its Software Development Kit (SDK) and many more Beta releases. Each of these releases has introduced new features, changed existing features or outright removed "old" features with little or no warning. Program features that worked in one release would change or stop working in another release. Regression testing of all of the product features with each update has become mandatory. Apple made a brilliant move when they invited the Developer community to come and create applications for their new iPhone and iPod Touch platforms and sell them on their iTunes App Store, for a "reasonable" commission. However, they also set strict rules for what kinds of programs would be acceptable for submission to the Store and what programming tricks could be used to make the App work to its best ability; but they didn't clearly publish what all those rules are to the Developer community. Getting your App approved and released on the App Store has been a point of much debate, and griping, on the Developer forums. Usually, it goes through fairly smoothly, but sometimes your App goes into a black hole, for weeks, or months at a time. Developing Applications for the iPhone is a very exciting and challenging business to be in right now, but it has some real Ups and Downs that you need to deal with along the way.
